The Macy’s employee brutally beaten inside a Michigan mall is requesting leniency for his attacker — who testified this week that his brother falsely claimed the store manager called him a racial slur.
Damire Palmer, 18, pleaded guilty Wednesday to the caught-on-video June 15 attack at the Flint store, local outlet WJRT-TV reported.
But Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said the Macy’s employee, who is still dealing with the trauma of the assault, declined to take the stand.
Instead, they decided on a plea agreement which dictates that the felony charge against Palmer — assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder — would be dropped from his record if he completes his sentence.
That sentence could range from probation to 10 years behind bars, according to the report. At the victim’s request, the agreement ensures that the teen will not have a felony record.
“Basically, you beat this guy so bad he was quite bloody, correct?” the assistant prosecutor asked Palmer, according to WJRT-TV.
“Yes,” Palmer replied.
“And did you know that he has agreed that you should be treated as a youthful offender even though you beat on him like that?” the assistant prosecutor asked him.
“No, I did not know that,” the teen answered.
The teen explained that just before the attack, he had asked the Macy’s employee a question “about the jacket type that I was about to get.”
After the manager replied, the teen’s brother told him the worker called him the n-word, he claimed. He has since learned that his brother made up that account.
Palmer said he “wouldn’t know” why his brother would do such a thing, according to the report.
The viral video of the attack even captured President Trump’s attention.
“Looks what’s going on here,” Trump wrote on June 22. “Where are the protesters? Was this man arrested?”
